                                                            JAZZ BUMPS!!!

The idea that “if you don’t know what it is, then it’s Jazz” resonates with me as a broad statement. However, Jazz represents very different things to different people. It’s often said that at it’s roots, Jazz draws from the blues. With this in mind one could probably make a decent argument to say that most popular songs made since are influenced even if it’s indirectly from Jazz (ie the Blues). That being said, i will say this….. Taste is key. Being a musician who collects records is a wonderful thing! It’s a never-ending, dot-joining journey of discovery and self discovery. I realised after many years of diggin in-between rehearsals and gigs that this mix is very important for me to inspire and inform my playing and appreciation of music. It keeps me a fan, and now more so than ever with Jazz.

So, the idea of starting a regular Jazz record listening evening came about. I needed to find a suitable local location not far from my neighbourhood of Friedrichschain in Berlin where the Jazz would be welcome. I found one. Rummels Bucht is a lovely club/open air bar in East Berlin near Ostkreuz S bahn. It has a great sound system outside in the bar and friendly staff including a bartender called Jazz. i kid ye not :)

The artwork was done for me by my good friend Julio Rolle from 44Flavours. We had a session where i went over to his art studio with a bunch of my favourite lp covers and talked art. We agreed on paying homage to the brilliant “Monk’s Miracles” cover (pictured in photo) and i absolutely love what he did with it.

To share the celestial sessions i’ve enlisted Kool Herb, a rogue veteran 7” collector and drummer from Munich. He’s a dude, and together the Jazz is strong with us. We connected through a shared passion for certain personal key records and now surprising one another with gems each week fuels the fire. a Jazz fire!

If you find yourself in Berlin on a tuesday then come n warm yer cockles on it.

JAZZ BUMPS with Sneaky and Kool Herb

My favourite Bon Iver track. Lyrically and melodically i think it’s beautiful, and then there’s his vocal delivery which is captivating to say the least. Whilst i was obsessively listening to it like a drug i started to hear extra string stuff in my head, so i spent an evening playing over the track with my cello in a large dark room, and this is the result. My hope is that what i added does actually add and not detract from the original, which isn’t in anyway lacking by the way. My feeling is that it works pretty well which is why i’ve shared it :) It’s on my recent “goosebumps” mix https://x.mixcloud.com/sneaky/goosebumps/
Thankyou Justin Vernon.

It’s been a long time since i made a mix and this one has probably been in the making for about the last 5 years. Inspiration hit home recently and i was compelled to put it together. It’s over 2 and half hours long and documents my deeper tastes and mood in music right now. It is most definitely genre NON specific as is becoming my custom and every track pushes my buttons in that goosebump inducing kind of a way! See where i’m going with this?
Put another, slightly more dramatic way….Music to bloomin live for!
The deeper i got into the process i naturally added my own twists on things so there are several cheeky edits, a new Fingathing tune, an exclusive remix, together with a splattering of semi-righteous sayins n doins along the way. I hope you feel the selections like i do.
Time to chill and reflect…….and then move forward. So put the kettle on and turn it up. HAPPY 2014 EVERYONE! Artwork type by Chris Drury direct download link: http://mfi.re/listen/3bkg6iymg9lpjb9/goosebumps_with_sneaky_final5.mp3

For her new album “Olvido”, although working with @Robot-Koch and @SneakyMusic again, @GracielaMaria kept much more control of the producing part. The result sounds even more organic and acoustic than her debut. The electronic elements are very subtly used and the arrangements sound like a minimal playing but orchestral sounding folk band.

This new album is calmer but more intense, like an intimate whisper in a church or cold water dripping in a cave. Only the song “Last Place” with its snarling bassline reminds of the earlier electronica and dubstep influences. More than the last album, ”Olvido” includes songs with Spanish lyrics, nearly half of the songs are sung in Graciela Maria’s native language, which once more increases the closeness of the songs. “Olvido” is life written in music, music that invites us to listen to the silent moments that pass unnoticed. The lyrics of this album embrace the empty spaces left by losses. It is a requiem to a past that cannot be grasped with words and that Graciela Maria holds with her voice to avoid looking into the abyss. This album is to be heard in solitude, to look inside one´s self and ask: What is it, that we see there? What do we listen to and who are we?

Graciela Maria writes free verses, not looking for exact metrics her voice is floating on piano lines, drifting through organic sounds and gliding on cello strings. She creates an atmosphere of a standstill in time, remembering what has been, listening to the hours gone by. The voice on Olvido should be followed… because it´s an echo of a lost century in which poetry was written to feel life with words and to be able to die every night.
